Default Fitchburg Forge-In 2019

Since I had come out of retirement and gotten involved with the blacksmithing community I have been asked each year to participate in the "Fitchburg Forge-in".

It is a blacksmithing competition that has a promenent smith pick 3 projects for 3 different groups of smiths. beginner, intermediate and professional.

I was told I would not be allowed to be in the beginner nor intermediates so I was lopped into the pro category. Though I don't forge but once a month and don't really sell anything so don't really see how I am a pro on paper. LOL.

the first 2 items were timed with 1hr for each task, were a treble herb hook with a jamb pintle hook out of 5/16round and 10" of 1/4" sq. 7 chain links 2.5" long out of 3/8" round, and 2hrs for a thumb latch and all the associated parts to make it work.

Halfway through the thumblatch I was dizzy and very tired but carried on.

Anyhow, I kicked butt... There were 5 or 6 in the pro division and some very talented smiths for sure. One of the guys stepped up into the pro division and he placed. All the other guys were pros with shops and a few guys teaching as well.

Nice work. And I remember you making videos and teaching some of those items, so at least you had an idea of how to make them. That is part of the reason you are a pro. Once a pro, always a pro.

Just as we get older, we just loose a little edge in how fast we can do the work sometimes.

Nice sweep of the awards too.

Nice work Jenn! It's easy to see why you were tossed in the pro category!

You are a pro. Have been since I have seen your work. Humility is a virtue, but accepting what you are is also a virtue. Congrats!!!!!!!

While I partially agree in an exageration the knowing how to do something (watching a video or even previ0us experience) is not the same as doing it daily. No matter how good the memory is, with 13 years off there are many, many things that just fall away in the memory. LOL.

Crazy how fast time goes.

After the fact for sure is easy right. but there was some top work turned in. I got lucky as 2 smiths I thought turned in better work. they got disqualified for a the wrong handle shape.
