Default Carving Hatchet

So this past weekend (9/13-14) At the NEB (New England Blacksmiths) fall meeting I spent Friday night and part of Saturday making and cleaning up a sample forging for a demo I have in a few more weeks.

It is a 2 piece, folded construction. It started life as a 1/2"X 2" or so as it was forged off another bar which was oversized. All done single.

I will show this piece and the next one as this was the prototype having been 30 years since i made the last one. Came out ok. Nice to be back in the home shop as the equipment was not fit for precision.

Is this for a stone carver? The Inuit use small axes to rough shape a soapstone.

That is a neat little hatchet. I assume its mild steel and you welded a bit into it? Is it patterned after a particular period? Or style you came across?
Most of the woodcarvers I've watched used hatchets these days prefer a somewhat bearded style, so they can choke their grip up and get behind the edge. This looks much more traditional.

Is is mild steel with the HC welded onto it vs into it. It is only sharpened on one side just like a siding down axe. its a combination of siding down axes I had seen and then wanting to have something that can be pushed with the thumb in proper carving mode.

My more traditional for sure. The equipment at the meet was not the best and there were a bunch of factors of the "This will work".. Though not ideal.

I plan on making one more tomorrow with the refinements I did not do at the meet. I'll be working in the trailer which will be nice especially with the new monster anvil.

The cutting edge might be a little thin as I used only enough HC (file) as needed before drawing out the edge.

Anyhow bunch of things I would fix having to do it again, but it will be a great hatchet. I'll post pics once done and acid etch it. the edge will be thinner than I wanted but should work fine. Really forged more as a demo piece for an upcoming demo but I have to have it completely forged in 2.5 to 3 hrs on someone elses equipment.
