I've fixed the grill. There were 2 issues. The flange on the end of the long pipe handle had broken off of one end. The pipe is thin steel with a plating on it. I was able to add a little steel collar for support and weld it back to it's flange. The other part was a "boss" attached inside one end of the lid for the hinge pin. It welded just like mild steel. Both parts were welded back with just plain 70-6 wire and 75/25 gas.

Prior to welding, I tested the pieces with a magnet. The magnet stuck to all of the stuff. I have a scrap of stainless in my pile and the magnet wouldn't stick at all. This is why I figured the stuff would weld like mild steel.

I couldn't believe how crappy the stuff was welded to begin with. The tiny little tack welds were about the size of the end of a sharpie pen. Sorry, didn't have a way to get pics.

Some stainless is magnetic and some isn't. I have definitely encountered 304 structural stainless that the magnetic side of my level stuck to.

300 series stainless is not magnetic and if so ever so slightly. 400 series stainless is magnetic.

Glad you got him fixed up!!

Yes, I should add that the magnetic field is very weak when I have come across it on 304.
