Check and see if the fan will work, if wired in series with a 100 watt bulb. If the bulb is mounted as a "BIG" indicator light on the welder you will know if it is on when you are a distance away and in a high noise area. Nothing more frustrating than trying to strike an arc and realizing that the welder is "Off".

The leads have taken quite some time to get to this condition, so I doubt they need to be repaired right away. I'd keep my eye open for a good deal and replace them with new or next to new and get another 35 years.

I agree with this, take the time and expense of trying to cobble up the old, sell the copper and buy new. When its all done the old are still old.
