Default G4003 lathe accident

My neighbor was parting some exotic stainless and the tool snagged. Before he could react the compound was resting under the chuck. The following pictures say it all. Note the quality and thickness of the cast. I should have taken a pic of the nut that holds the compound on the cross slide. It doesn't grab much. I have the same lathe except it's not the gunsmith model. I will be shaping a "T" nut for a more substantial purchase on the cross slide.

Moe,

Thats a pretty thin casting, Do you have any picture of the rest of the lathe? Depending on replacement part cost, is it fixable or a total write off?

Jack

edit
Typing while Moe was posting. Second set of pics, pretty much answered my questions.

Jack, Grizzly is shipping out a new cross slide. Took it off another lathe. No questions asked. I told him to sen the pics I took so they would know why.. All the damage was confined to the cross slide.

Moe, glad to see the pics.

As Jack asked, what's the direction you think you'll be headed? Tee nut only?

The neighbor needs a name and an SFT membership, otherwise I'll have to make one up.

We used to get $25 bucks mailed from Lubbock for every new member we bring, unless that has changed.

That is outstanding service. Glad to hear it. I'm getting more and more warm fuzzies about Grizzly.

Point is big guy, get the bugs worked out before I head up to Missouri to pick mine up.

Moe, from the photos the cast looks kind of porus or low quality. I have been looking at one of those. I might better off with an old South Bend. I have no experience and there will be mistakes. You rated it highly, do you still feel that way. Is there a way to beef up the replacment part? The good thing is Grizzly will have the part and will get it to you quick. Was everything else ok. I hope he wasn't hurt.

If this is true, lately, a lot of money has been staying in the great state of Texas.

No he wasn't hurt. Left stains on the floor though..

I still like my lathe. I saw where the problem is and will rectify it with modified T nuts. Just needs more contact with the cross slide. I will take pics of the OEM hold down.

Jef I think modified T nuts will do the job. I will take pics as I get into it. I may machine a block to put under the front of the compound. That way the force is transmitted through the front and not pulling up on the rear.

Jack, that's been so since day one. It's not changed one iota except for there being more of em.
