Default 5C collet adapter

For those with lathes that have a MT5 spindle you can have a real cheap collet closer using parts from the Grizzly high dollar system. In the following link you will find breakdown and PN's for the necessary parts. Since I have a Chinnee lathe I used parts 1,4 and 5. Those who don't can use 1 and 4 and fab the rest. A hand wheel can be easily fabed.

I bought the Enco 18 collet set which is more than adequate for the HSM.

Any questions ask away. I'm putting mine together now. Pics when it's done.

For those who want really cheap (like me), use a hex colet block held in a 3 or 6-jaw chuck (or a square block in a 4-jaw). It's not as convenient as a regular collet closer as you have to unchuck the collet to loosen/tighten.

Default A better collet closer

Moe, you're a good man with a good idea! A better "feel is obtained when tightening via hand wheel.

I did not know Grizzly sold an accessory collet closer, let alone they would sell some parts alone without being a unit purchaser of record.

Your method has to be a lot less money than the Kalamazoo CC1 I had to purchase 4 months ago.

My hat is off to you!

Best regards,

Amigo

Thanks.

The total for all parts, which were in stock, was $109.95. Free shipping.

anyone willing to guess if this will work with the "short MT5" The adapter looks shorter than a full taper in the pic?

If you are looking for a Sheldon short 5MT adapter, the Chinese lathe adapter won't fit. Sheldon used 2 3/8" from the small end of the 5MT and the Chinese lathe adapters use 2 3/8" from the large end of the MT. I know because I bought one and tried it. I ended up making one.

Default 5MT - 5C off the self closer

I found a 5C – 5MT adaptor and closer in Australia from Australian Gas & Industrial: http://www.t4i.com.au/C980. I purchased this by e-mailing Tristen Northmore at: Australian Gas & Industrial tristen@agais.com.au. I received three pieces six days after ordering, shipped by TNT Express through Houston TX. I will grant the $150 AU shipping that I used was a bit of a hitch in the getalong, but sometimes one bites the bullet. I discovered it was transshipped from Hare & Forbes in Australia, who sells at the same prices. http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/C980 Their web site is set up for web purchasing. It seems someone put some pride in the closer, and it works well on my lathe. Check the specs. though. Hope this helps someone.
