If you get a chance show him what it's like to punch holes with a thick steel plate under the piece of wood. He might warm up to it when he realizes the table he is hammering on is absorbing much of his effort.

Good idea. Mass is good in this situation. We are done with the punching. We also put the wood on the floor. It helped. Those hollow plastic tables are good for some things, just not shop tables.... I have a couple of edges to get turned, then we assemble.

AAaaaannndd its done!! He's happy with it. Not perfect, but it was his first project. I'm pleased also. We had to pull a bit of overtime as he wanted to give it for a Christmas present. I now have my copy to finish. It too is "promised" out. Can't wait to get the report on how it was received. Note. I apologize for the sideways pics.
