I am just guessing but may be a sensor for if an object passes its path/zone it sets off an alarm/warning or turns on a light? My uncle had something similar that when he pulled the vehicle in enough to clear the garage door the device would turn on a light letting him know he was far enough in.

If it was mounted just above light-switch height near the entry door to the garage.
Likely a touch pad to activate the garage door opener.
