On the motor box of my boat trailer it has a t-handle lock on the door. The handle turns a camming sort of thing inside with two cams that rotate in opposite directions. Each cam has a long steel rod that engages a hole drilled in the side of the box's metal edge. The mechanism is broken (the handle turns, but does not turn the cams).
Damned if I can find this type of mechanism anywhere and I'm not even sure what it's called. I tried googling "cam lock", "trailer door lock", "t-handle trailer door lock", etc. All I can find is the t-handle itself with the associated little square rod. I need the actual mechanism. Any idea? |

Nope, nothing on there like what I am looking for. Been on all the trailer and hardware sites I can find.

We use these all the time. Do a search for "multi-point lock"...I think that's what you're looking for. T-handle on the outside has a 5/16" square shank that goes into the latch mechanism on the inside. Turning the handle rotates two arms which in turn connect to two rods which extend to the sides of the door.
Not much to go wrong with these. The rods are usually held into the arms with cotter keys--have they fallen out? Does the 5/16 shank turn when you turn the handle--pretty hard to do but it could be broken...

Looks like the lock off of an old fiberglass pickup topper

What part exactly is broken? Does the 5/16 square rod turn with the handle? The rest of it is fairly simple and could fairly easily be fabbed up.

That's pretty much it, except it has a round center plate (looks like it is stamped steel) that encloses the whole thing with only slits on each side where the steel rods go in.
I can't tell exactly what is broken. The handle turns, but nothing happens, so something inside that plate is broken. The plate is riveted to the backing plate and I can't even see or tell where the handle mounts to it (no visible screws). There are no screw heads on the outside of the handle either, just round, smooth heads (like a small carriage bolt head). |
