Default Caterpillar pin - question on steel

The local Craigslist has a "Caterpillar link pin. Steel pin length 60mm (23 1/2") long x diameter 120mm (4 3/4") has threads in the end with yellow plate. Weighs about 100 pounds. $20 obo"

It looks like it might be one of those link pins that's on the main boom of an excavator at the "elbow". Can anyone hazard a guess as to what it might be made of and what kind of hardness to expect? I just thought it might be something we could use as raw stock to make bender dies or whatever.

Pop for 20 bucks buy it. Then test it for hardness with a hacksaw.

We got it. What a monster! I didn't notice at first, but it looks to be chrome plated even though a bit of rust is showing through in a couple patches. Has a part number on the link: 251-2547 CAT 184. I was hoping to look it up on the web and see what a new one is worth but can't find anything. The CAT parts site requires registration.

If we can figure out how to work it, it would be nice stock for some bender dies or a golf ball howitzer.

USMCPOP, I figure that you can sell it to someone that needs that part for enough to buy plenty of stock material to build a lot of projects.

In time the right project will find the scrap pile, no need for the scrap pile to go out looking for a project.

If they can use it with a few spots where the chrome isn't 100% intact, then great. I can't imagine the cost of a new one. $$$

If nothing else, I'll stop by a CAT dealer and have them look up the part number and price.

Pop it is only plated and probably not as expensive as you'd think.... I'll check it and let ya know....
EDIT:
I stand corrected POP my cost for that pin is $1203 and the closest one is in Waco Tx.

USMCPOP, there are several heavy equipment forums out there where you might be able to register and tell them about the pin.

King of Obsolete has been on some and he should be albe to help you with it. Check out his profile and send him an e-mail.
