Full Annealing

Full annealing is one of several types of annealing wherein steels are heated just above the Ac3 temperature for low- and medium-carbon steels, just above the Ac1 temperature for hypereutectoid steels, and slowly cooled in the furnace after heating has ceased. Full annealing involves austenite formation. The slow cooling associated with the full annealing process causes austenite transformation to ferrite and pearlite close to A3 and A1 temperatures, respectively, and ensures that coarse-grain equiaxed ferrite and pearlite with coarse interlamellar spacing will form, producing microstructures of high ductility and moderate strength. Generally, an annealing temperature 50°C (90°F) above the Ac3 for hypoeutectoid steels and above the Ac1 for hypereutectoid steels is adequate.
