My sarcasm meter may be off lately, so I'm not sure what you are getting at.
If you are asking if I'm likely one of the few who have started the class who has actually paid into the system that the class receives its funding from, then yes, my tax money is supporting my participation. Back on topic, I got to do my first overhead welds this week. Here is my 3-pass fillet weld using 7018. |

The overhead weld looks presentable. Looks like one pinhole in one edge. Edges could be straighter, but nothing burning another 50 lbs of rod will not cure.
![]() I think you are doing good. As far as the 6010, that rod is hard to get a nice looking bead. It can be done, but the nature of the rod makes it difficult. Sent from my iPhone using ShopFloorTalk

Reason I ask is there looks like mill scale there. And I'm not seeing the HAZ...

In class, I just leave my glasses off, as the 'reader' section is way too small and way down at the bottom of the lens. We also have to wear class-issued safety glasses and a surgical mask under out welding hood. It is a wonder my welds are anything close to straight, as my safety glasses are all fogged up from wearing a mask and my vision sucks. My instructor loaned me a used 2+ cheater lens to use in my hood, which helps, but is not ideal. I'm not saying my weld results would be phenomenal if I could actually see, but I think they would be at least a little better. I landed a big project that started the day after Labor Day, which is making it challenging to do things like make an appointment to get new glasses, but I am going to try to do so in November. I'd like to get some prescription safety glasses in both single-focus standard vision and single-focus readers. Shoot, now that I've typed that out, I wonder if someone makes single-focused safety glasses with various standard power lenses like those cheap readers you can pick up at almost every store? |

The selection of powers is limited, but other suppliers may have more selection.

You could do what I do. I have a cheap pair of readers that I put inside my regular glasses. The prescription classes take care of the astigmatism etc. and the readers (in different strengths) takes care of the change in focal length. The closer you are to the work the higher number for the readers. Standard arms length is 1.5, at 10" I use 1.75 and for splinters a 2.25. YMMV

Get a cheater lens for inside the hood. I use one and it helps me.

from the class. Why ? And why would you put up with that behavior ? |
