Massey used a swing a rotary "Cylinder" in that time frame. They didn't work all that well and parts in this area were scarce. After looking up the machine you are looking at, they used cylinders on each side of the pivot. A much better design. The local power co. dumped many a Massey machine which is probably why parts were scarce.

Backhoe arrived safely..

The driver/hauler just had a dodge dually with 20ton trailer in tow.. He wielded that thing like he stole it..

The seller Matt came too and I noticed a wet spot in front of the tractor.. He said it sprung a water pump leak..

I figure this kind of thing will happen.. So no biggy..

This unit has a D282 engine and water pumps new are reasonably priced so ordered one..

I moved the backhoe arm on my trailer in order to save some money.. Its 15ft long.. The gantry has a 1ton rating and it lifted one end of it just fine.

I then used a Lever winch to pull it off the trailer.. I tied the lever winch to the concrete footing of the shed dormer.

I'd love to find a trailer like that for reasonable coin..

I'm not sure what is under the unit.. It looks like dried oil, grease and dust..

I hate working on dirty equipment so broke out the 4400psi pressure washer and had at it.

I cleaned up both outside and inside.. The stuck-on stuff wasn't really oily..

So I'm guessing it just sat for a very long time.. I also pulled out some vegetation..

From what the owner told me a guy used it on a farm to move poo around.. The farmer removed the backhoe and just left it off..

Matt the guy I bought it from went through the pivot unit with new seals.

This pivot unit was used on several backhoes IH produced.. If I can find seals and such I might pull it apart again just to make sure it's clean and serviceable.

All the bucket joints look decent and after the pressure blasting I went and greased every zerk I could find with Mobil CMM which is a construction pressure grease with moly.

I found some damage to the steering linkage and kingpin hat on the right side.. I will pull it apart when time allows..

The brakes do not work.. The parking brake does work.

I will remove the tire/rim and look into the brake issue.. They are hydraulic brakes ran from the transmission.

Also, this unit has only 2 hydraulic pumps both running from the transmission.

this model 3800 has a clutch/brake pedal so full RPMs can be used while using the bucket.. So it has 2 brake pedals..

one regular brake pedal.. RPMs will lower when letting off the gas pedal..

and then a 2nd one that you can keep the RPMs up and it will disengage the clutch pack and apply the brakes all the while staying on the gas..

The auto level unit for the bucket has been removed.. The items are still on the arm but the inside unit has been removed.. I'll look further into it when I replace the water pump and belts.

The items under the grime look amazing..

I'm starting to think it might be some type of undercoating.

I greased everything till the water was done coming out and grease came out clean.. There was not a lot of old grease in there.. Most of it came out clean right away.

I will need to stock up on fluids now and start looking at changing them out.

The transmission and hydraulics call for IH Hy-tran..

SAE 30 for the motor.

I don't mind risking a good mobil hydraulic oil but the Hy-tran for the transmission will be a must..

Not worth taking a chance.

Jenn what's the backhoe control arrangement, is it a number of individual levers at each side of the seat?

I wish it had foot swing controllers.. for me it's faster and get things less confused.

I believe the two brake peddles are for steering when needed, one peddle for each rear wheel

Never seen a setup like that before, seems like it would be nice improvement over the old style row of levers in front of you but not as good as two joysticks.

The 3 peddles from right to left at the drivers seat are..

throttle, brake (engine will go to idle or what ever the throttle behind the seat for backhoe operations is set at) and then on the left is Clutch/brake..

This pedal disengages the transmission completely and applies the brakes.. So one can keep the pedal to the metal so to speak.. This will allow for full power hydraulics to the bucket and not to the drive line.

I will find out. I think it's very handy position wise as you can just relax your arms at your sides and use each lever..

I'll know in a little bit.. Got a few more things to order..
