sliding drill press vise mount project
I get tired of bolting and unbolting the vise on the drill presses just becomes a pain in the rear...……. so I'm using 3/8" plate for the base 1" for the vise mount and 3/4" square stock for the sliding rail this will allow the vise to slide front to back and also allow some stops to be added for repeatability... now instead of using the table clamp beneath to spin the table I am going to make a center pin in the mounting plate with a spring that allows me to pull up and spin the plate with the vise mounted to it so to change the side direction.... on the bottom of pin I think I will use a folding friction latch to keep it locked in to place.... other than the vise it is a scrap pile project and a use what ever I can find in the pile to finish the project So far this is what I have milled out a groove that the 1" will slide on will also be adding a thumb screw to lock it in to position

got a little bit more done on it got the base made the two grooved rails and the vise mount milled out...
need to pick up some machine thread screws to attach the rails was going to weld but can't weld the inside grove with out causing issues being now the next step is to surface grind all the parts to tolerances will prolly mill some oil groves in base plate and some felt cloth reliefs for oiling passages.... prolly don't really need all that being its just a drill press vise but figure it will work smoothly I will still be able to use the 1" mounting block on the mill drill and surface grinder the way its made if I need to use the particular vise..... I'm sure some of yawl have already been this rodeo with a sliding drill press vise If you have some suggestions or ideas that will improve on this project let me know any way here is where I'm at with it.

Just wondering if a dovetail would be any easier to add, or on one side.

If you're past that point, the next best thing would be to machine the slot on the vise mount deeper so that you can use a gib to tighten it up.
Thumb screw on mild steel will mar the surface, and make future setups hard to do. Gib will spread the screw pressure out over the surface. |

I was thinking of using a gib to tighten it up My issue is I'm still learning this stuff as far as the set prosses up goes for making parts... heck I guess anyone can mill out a flat surface and I have the general idea I guess.... but I'm not so sure on how to do certain set up's but I'm getting there being this is just for the purpose of the drill press and not precision work it can be a bit crude/sloppy as it's purpose is for the ability to bolt down the vise but be able to move it to center a position after its bolted because when it is bolted down as the vise only.... it is not even close to being centered with out a lot of manipulation as for a gib I have some brass stock I was figuring on using not sure if its the rite material to use or not..

This one is the learning curve I'm going through and many mistakes have already been made I'm sure but in hopes the next one will be better as I need to make five more and 2 will have to operate different in the way they mount to the tables and will need a swivel base as well
worse part is most of the material is scrap and I do not have enough of the same material to cookie cut them. but I will say this it sucks to have arthritis and have to mill this stuff by hand manually with no power feed

It will prolly make one for one of the line drill presses of course lots of people who come by here wonder why a person would have so many drill presses just simply reply saves set up time so one for each prosses had a couple of gang drills which I thought would be useful but found I rather have individual DP's cause when I have a long piece of material that needs to be drilled I can use the other tables to support the work piece any way traded the gang drills off for other stuff I need in the shop.... lately I've been making a few small benders for 1/4" and 3/8" round bar and flat strap for people who are making table legs and flower pot holders. cheap to make and usually takes nothing more than a few little pieces from the trash pile I would normally haul off for trash...
