Default Need help on some mystery metal.

Okay guys I got some mystery metal. It is an exhaust manifold off a Dodge 318 from a motor home, vintage is mid seventies, very little rust but this puppy does not weld like any cast iron I have welded on the rod (99% nickel) just beads up and rolls off. I blasted the casting first then ground a bevel, on the broken face it was in two peices, It almost looked as it had been hot dip galvanized, but it had a heavy coating on it. It is not paint as I blasted it first.

Very strange.

Any ideas.

Shade, not that I can help.

I had an early 70's Dart with the 340 engine and found after I bought the basket case car, that the manifolds were cracked/broken. I tried at the time to fix as well.

Thinking it was some sort of cast metal, I tried the nickel rod to no avail. Almost acts like a s/s coating of some sort.

Having no other avenues, I scrap'd em and bought some junk yard goodies.

Of course, you could try doing searches for RV forums and you might get lucky. Try some of the MOPAR sites as they might have some ready information as well.

Good to know it not me or that the heat has melted my brain.

There is a Mopar symbol on the casting. I just half assed braze welded the damn thing. It should hold, it is cooling right now, and then I am gonna blast it again to make sure is doesn't have any holes in it.

It is still a mystery to me but they are together...

I didn't like to be brazed either but I got it to work, not pretty, but together.

Ron,
I have a friend that builds street rods, and he cuts and welds manifolds quite often. what he does is heat it till it's yellow, then welds with 70s6 wire.

Shade the manifolds look pre-lean burn engine manifolds. You/the customer should be able to find these by the hundreds off truck engines in the more northern auto salvage yards. (and 99% of them will be cracked) lol

It's been a very long time since I had anything to do with engines like that, but I do seem to remember that at one time ceramic coatings were used on some exhaust parts.

Conventional shot blasting will not touch engineering ceramics, and obviously weld will not stick to it.

As you ground out the crack line there may have been enough clean metal revealed to, just, take the braze metal.

If it is ceramic coated then you really may not be able to trust the integrity of that braze though.

Borrow some of Cutter's (unused) black hi-temp paint, glob it on nice & heavy, you're good to go

That braze looks pretty decent to me.

Is it possible that the major amount of heat cycles that that manifold has been through changed the composition of the iron? Maybe it burned out some carbon or modified some other element in it's make up?
