"1/2 of an anvil"

Looks like it was quickly & violently removed from the other half....

There are stories of union troops during the Civil war destroying anvils to cripple the confederates ability to produce any thing for the war effort. I'm not sure if it's true or not. But, it could be one possibility.

I think it is more like 1/3rd of an anvil. Well worth the $45!

It still has the feet so I'm guessing they just broke the back horn off. I bet its a cast iron cheapo and somebody hit it a little too hard.

No, it was a whole anvil that was shipped using UPS.

Not sure if that would be still usable for farrier work? If so, maybe it was done to make it lighter for portability?

The story of Union troops destroying anvils has for the most part been proven untrue.

Anvils with the heel broken off are seen occasionally. I saw a 300 pound Fisher just this weekend in that condition. I have seen several smaller anvils in similar shape. Often it was caused by getting a tool stuck in the hardy hole.

As always YMMV.
