Although I too have used the pointed end to locate on punch marks I believe the intent of that end is to locate the center of larger rounds. There is a point where the straight end can no longer make contact with the outside of a piece as the diameter gets larger. This is where the pointed end can be useful.
A technologically advanced society would teach their children how to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together before teaching them how to use a lighter.

Aren't energy consumption and computers supposed to make life less stressful?
