The curved boom on a backhoe or excavator shifts the pivot of the boom and the stuck a little. It allows the bucket to ‘crowd’ in towards the machine farther, and by doing so, gives a stronger lifting force as well.

I’m also thinking it would make for a shorter overall machine when it’s tucked in tight, compared to a straight boom.
