As nobody invented a pipe thread, metric manufacturers have used National Pipe and made it a straight taper-less thread. That is what this cylinder uses, and a pipe coupling will work, but because of the taper it does not screw in more than 5/8 inch. I don't consider that enough on a taper.
I have threaded a hole in a 5"x12"x1" bar to screw the cylinder into, and slotted each side for pulling. Works well.
