Should work if you have enough meat left on the nut. How you going to thread the OD? I would not worry too much about the extended length on a wood lathe.

I have one of those hospital bed actuators Keith gave me a few years back. Have not yet decided whether to use it on the mill of the drill press. Guess it is about time to make a decision.:(

If by cylindrical, you mean a tapered bearing as in a wheel bearing, I expect it makes no difference. It only took me 10 minutes. The links may not be the cheapest.
