Older vehicles with steel fuel tanks sometimes had drains. 1973 Mercedes, 1991 Ford 250, and others I have experience with.
Once plastic fuel tanks evolved, drains were not doable.

I can't see any problem with a gas strut. You will have to make mount brackets, but even if it only boosts the window 90% of the way, the last bit to latch it up should be easier by hand.
