How about a magnetic clutch off of mower machine, they come in many sizes.
You will need coil voltage to engage and disengage is all, this may be safer.

Yes the universal one uses a o-ring belt over the control knob, the other one is driven by a #25 chain through a slip clutch behind the faceplate. You can check them out at www.up-ten.com
