Polarity was also correct.

I've postponed learning this skill for now...I switched to riveted gussets at all the joints for this project. I'll learn this later on a less time-critical project.

Joint area was cleaned with a stainless steel brush prior to welding. What looks like anodizing is fairly uniform light corrosion on the surface.
