You could measure the current at the transformer...

You could measure the current at the transformer primary to see if goes up when trying to weld. If you can get it to weld, that would give you a baseline for future reference.

The brass plates are probably the secondary winding of the transformer. How about trying a voltage measurement with an insulator between the tips to fake it out?

The output voltage is going to be low. I am guessing under 6 volts. You might measure the voltage open circuit at the tips and then while attempting a weld. I would repeat the test at the transformer...

I installed the pulser and sequencer in a 250. I kind of chuckled when I unwrapped them and just saw some pots and switches on the boards. All of the electronics is on the mother board. :D

I have used Vise Grips as a file handle. Wire nuts work on smaller files. I do have some wood handles that seem to stay put. I always worry about them coming off at the worst time. :eek:

Mig voltage and current (PIC)

The top trace on the scope shows the voltage output of my mig at 10 volts per division. The lower trace is current at 50 amps per division. Notice how low the voltage gets.
