Seems I had to take off to do some real work a couple months ago, but I've been looking for springs. McMaster-Carr has a good selection and you caan get lengths of 10 ft. or 100 ft. Ten will do it....

Wow!

New record for price of a quill spring: $879.00! And no, I didn't misplace a decimal point.

I have to wonder if they have ever sold one for that, or expect that they some day will. Same old...

I got the new needle bearings installed and the quill feed transmission put back together. I ordered the needle assemblies by the number that was on the rusty ones. It was a good Torington number...

OK, I got some numbers:

One full revolution of the quill feed handle moves the quill all the way--bottom to top.

The spring measured thickness of 0.0525".

The hub around which it wraps...

I had no time to try it today, but will take your advice tomorrow on a short chunk of the coil off of the outer end. I estimated about 8-1/4 ft total length. There should be plenty to experiment...

coil spring

I got sent out in the rain to evaluate an old hoarder's junk for WAAAMuseum. Among the worthless crap and a few really nice pieces, I found this flat coil spring. It is the right gauge metal, but...

Gwiz, you got it--the first picture is the spring and housing and spring that I need. The pic in the parts book shows only three bolt holes, but six would give a finer adjustment. Do you have one...

I went to the shop and did a bit of measuring: The hub around which the spring winds is 1.120" Dia. It has a groove cut in it about 0.055--0.057" wide which would be some indication of the maximum...

I felt I had to drill through so that I could remove the roll pin and clutch. There's pretty much no way to disassemble the quill feed without removing the clutch.

I got what I thought was a...

One slow, slow hole done

I clamped up the new clutch and the new shaft in my old drill press and commenced to drill a 5/32" hole for the roll pin. I hunted all over town and couldn't find a cobalt drill so used a HSS drill....

The old shaft had a hogged out hole. The roll pin that was in it would not go through the hole in the new clutch, and the old clutch split through the hole on both sides. So, I am assuming that...

Here's the new parts. Note there is the hole in the clutch on just one side, no hole in the shaft. Is it standard procedure to fit parts this way? I don't know how hard these pieces are,...

Maybe what I'm looking at is 435B stuck tight onto 434B. I can't tell because there is a lot of upset metal in that area. ...
