LOL ya thats a bit much the most I had to work on was 1.5" How many welders is he running? At work I would have to use two machines to use 1/2" carbons.

On 1/2" or thicker I just use a cutting torch...

On 1/2" or thicker I just use a cutting torch and bevel the crack all the way threw, a lot faster and your not breathing all those fumes. I will sometimes use a scarfing tip.
