You can cut a keyway on a lathe, winding the saddle by hand to cut like a shaper. It’s a bit of a pain in the butt but it works.

Welding fumes from stick of flux cored are really bad news. I find I have to weld these processes with a fan behind me to blow away the fumes. Of the two flux core is worse for me.

Have to agree with you on machining the stuff, a stainless nut and shaftcan grab so bad you have to cut the nut to remove it, plus it can walk all over the place when welding.

I rivetted it but I think if I make some bigger ones I will use bolts. I just used scrap and have another one nearly done but need some more 1/8 for one of the legs.

When this runs out I’ll try it, found it leaves a baked on coat which resists rust so I’ll give them a quick flap disc in future before rusting.
I am making a few more wheels for Xmas.

I was lucky, my lathe came with an internal thread so was able to make one up pretty easy. They are really worth it, I used 3 bolts but it would have been better with four.

A mining company I worked for had a key holder on top of the lathe with a switch in it, you had to put the key in before the lathe would turn on. I guess someone had left the key in the chuck one...
