Although I too have used the pointed end to locate on punch marks I believe the intent of that end is to locate the center of larger rounds. There is a point where the straight end can no longer make contact with the outside of a piece as the diameter gets larger. This is where the pointed end can be useful.

I use the pointed end to find center of rounds all the time. I'm glad to see someone else knows how to use them too.

Got outbid on the first two but got this one for the opening bid of $40. $53 with shipping. YEAH!!! It is a MHC, which means nothing to me. 7 piece set. .0005 accuracy.
