Latest from the forge.. Forged at the last demo which was at an outdoor show..

1018 Wrap with 5160 bit welded into it..

That looks paper thin.

And hard to make.

Thats funny.. :)

Plenty thick.. 5/16 at the poll with a tapered to the edge..

One of the things i get asked at demo's is what is the hardest thing to make..

It's not that there is anything really harder than another.. It just means it takes longer to make..

Reason is there are really only 4 skills or techniques used for making all the items I have ever made..

it's all swinging hammer, heatijng metal..

The demo place was supposed to be offering hawk throwing or at least they did last year... It was an outdoor expo with shooting, MTB'ing, skeet, fishing, etc, etc..

One of the guys asked if there was a target.. I said I like moving targets so if he ran fast enough, he might have a chance.. It doesn't sound funny now taken out of context but it raised a nervous laughter in the crowd..

I like it. The square poll is different to most which are round.

How long did it take to make?

Pure sex!
That is so nice, you are an artist, for sure.
Just for fun, what would that sell for,if it was for sale?

I don't know what happened but the original poles of any hawk were not truly round.. Over the last 20+ years people have morphed them into being round..

They were roundish shape with a triangular shape of the front where the weld seam was.. This made it really easy to both shape the hawks eye and fit the handle to stay straight with the blade..

This handle was bought from a friend of mine who ordered it from a company who does a whole bunch of trades stuff... He bought handles for making peace pipes..

It's not square but more pear shaped..

personally I like a more traditional eye but this handle was the shape the pole was made to.. I had to make a new drift to do it but that's ok..

Time to forge this is about 45minutes to 1 hr.. I didn't have the eye drift so if you include that add in another hr.. So the eye was just forged to a rough shape but the right dimension or length around..

Took about 30minutes to clean it up because I was using crappy coal which spewed molten clinker back onto it so it needed to be cleaned up more to get it ready for hardening and tempering..

If I were making these in abundance I could get them down to 30minutes forging time, belt grinder would bring finish work down to 5 minutes. Heat treat 5minutes..

Really quite fast to produce..

Randy, It would depend totally on the person and the place and the attitude the person presented when asking for price.. Youngster vs older.. Etc, etc..

Simple answer is based on the above factor.. Because I don't want to ever again forge for a living wage or need or want the work, I simple price things either out of a given common sense price point or just about give it away.

The price depending on the above factors would range from 125.00 to 250.00 depending on..

It's not fair one might say. But personally don't care anymore..

I'm still jaded from way back when I got burnt out and taking the 13years off and don't ever want to be in that position again..

I almost find I need to completely remove myself from the pricing stand point..

Sorry there is no straight answer.. If someone on here wanted one and sent me a standard old fashioned hawk handle that I had the drift for all ready maybe 85.00+ shipping to cover materials and expenses..

But if everybody wanted one for that price I'd just return all the money.. LOL as then it would become work vs a favor kind of thing.. Again.. I'd rather just do it for fun or teaching vs paid work..

So, I'd say the starting price would be 125.00 and up..

As I used to say, I don't need practice welding...
