Well originally I was going to add this to the damper build, but I'm feeling extra good about it so it deserves its own thread..

Over the years I have built all sorts of stuff, forged lots of different stuff and ever so often I make something which I take a shine to..

Not because it's purtty, not because it's so unique.. But because I made it..

Yup, both hands patting on the back.. I really don't mean it this/that way but every once in awhile I am just amazed I can do this or that..

So for measurements I used the old one..

Had some 1.25x1.25x0.125 angle hanging around so made it from that a peice of 5/16 R, and some flat 0.125 plate (not really plate but the only sheet metal I had that size)..

And the balance stop, The notch for the rod to pass thru to put it together and take it apart..

The first part (done yesterday) took 1hr 45 min to get the frame together, cut everything and welded..

This second part (today) is this series of pictures and the few next.. took 1hr 40 minutes..

Nice work Jen! Strangely enough, my Dad called me yesterday morning wanting me to build him exactly the same thing. I hope mine turns out as well as yours. :D

Me too because if she didn't then she wouldn't show it to us, then the world would be a darker place & the terrorists would win. :)

Very cool, Jennifer.

If you do build it.. I'd love to see how you do yours as there is a million different ways..

Before I took on this project I told the guy to just go online and buy one.. they are 20-150.00 in price.

As long as it is a standard size opening you would be all set.. The opening in this fireplace was a strange size as they used old style bricks back in the 40's. so nothing standard size would fit properly.
