That is sure a heck of a way to unload something, glad you were in the truck.
LOL
I have done that before as I am always on my own with this stuff. I was no way going to be under it and thought that worst case it would hit the ground and break, then I would strip out the good bits and scrap the rest.

I dream of the day I get a forklift and a chain block on a rolling carriage......

Sorry AJ, I was not criticizing the way you unloaded the press as I have done things similar.
I was referring to having the timbers break and drop it was a heck of a way to unload it.

Wow! AJ, give this opportunity serious consideration before you do anything else with that press.
I can see a nationwide franchise here:

AJ's Mexican Food & Hydraulic Tortilla Factory
Fine Family Dining & Southwest Grill
(no children allowed)

Well, then quit dreaming and build one.

I have seen at least one homebuilt forklift in person and it was being used in a lumber yard in the 1960s and 70s.

It was made from a 54 to 56 Ford truck.

Do not have photos of it howsever. I was not much of a picture taker back then.

I have seen many photos on the Web of homemade forklifts from various trucks.

I think that Farm Show Mag has shown a few in the past. They do have a website.

Even an old self propelled hay cutter or an old combine is good starting point because most of the work is already done with steering controls and hyd system in place. Might have to add another valve or stronger pump depending condition of the equipment.

And add some additional counter weight as well.

Charlie

I know you were not being critical. Yes it is a somewhat dodgy way to do it, but if there is no other way........
I was very surprised that the 4x4 snapped however, but I did reason that if the worst case happened ( and it did ), I would be nowhere near it. One advantage to always working alone is I have become cautious/paranoid about large objects. I still have all my fingers and toes.
Last year I got a large and almost as heavy tablesaw very cheap. Did the same deal only that time I could get the saw off the trailer before I drove away. Still needed the chain block to drag it into the shed where it sits now.

Cutter, Madam

Mexican food is not big on the dining circuit here. I can think of only one place in the city. Whilst very good food and very reasonable prices, it does not attract lots of people. The Happy Hour and cheap margaritas do however......
So, I doubt full scale production in the tortilla squishin' bidness would last very long.
Besides, this thing will flatten out a whole lot more than your tortilla if your not careful......

Harvuskong

I have 2 flies in the oinkment for getting my hands on a forklift.
Very little money with which to think about buying one, or even buy something else with which to build one from.
As we are a small country way down the bottom of the world even parts get spendy. A working but redundant combine would still cost more than I can spare and likely wind up costing more than fronting for a working forklift.

The other fly is that I am renovating the house with a view to selling. The next time around will have a shop built from scratch to be a shop and not something else converted with less than ideal quirks associated with its former life.
I have several chain blocks and a rolling carriage, but cant justify the work to install it all only to move away. The neighbour has a tractor and will happily come over if I ask, but he is busy with his own stuff and I dont like to ask unless I really am stuck.

I have seen a large dual front wheel forklift that has been parked in the corner of a yard and has sat there for years. I can only assume the engine croaked for some reason and it has been abandoned. I will go and ask about it when I am getting to the moving stage. If I brought home another dead machine right now my wife would go ballistic.

She asked what the 'thing' on the trailer was. I told her...........she asked what I wanted with it and was happy with the answer of 'Not sure yet' as I didnt pay for it.
The neighbour who although a good friend is manic/nuts/OCD etc asked what it was ( she misses little that goes past the house ). I told her it was an important component for the nuclear reactor I was building.

She wasnt sure if she should believe me or not.

And why would she not believe you. You have shown the ability to do things. Just be ready for the questions on when can I hook up for free electric.

As it is way to easy to tease her about almost anything and I have made some things that surprised her......she can longer tell when I am serious or not.
Which can have it's advantages.

I nearly.....almost went and got one of those green snap lights so I could spread blobs of 'glow' around the place.....but didnt want to push her too close to the edge. LOL

Since you have established the idea of a nuclear reactor in her head now tell her that the machine is used to mash the atoms. That sounds like some of the BS that I feed our female friends.
